What is constructive feedback?

ATTENTION EVERYONE*!

This evening’s assignment will be to check out your classmates’ projects on Act II, Scene 2 of Hamlet and leave constructive feedback for at least ONE of these projects.  Not everyone has presented just yet, however, and so these projects will not appear on the blog until after school TODAY (probably around 4:30-5pm).

In the meantime, leave a comment below to DEFINE what it means to give constructive feedback and PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE or two of what that type of feedback might be.  (Hint: Constructive feedback goes much farther than simply saying “your project was good” or “this presentation was lame.”)

*TARA:
I ask that you please join in on this as well.

  1. constructive feedback is when you tell someone what they did wrong or right, or tell them what they can improve on to make it better. (ex. if someone was writing a book and the plot was interesting you can say you did a very nice job instead of saying you are a horrible writer).

  2. constructive criticism is when you give some one ideas on ways to improve there project.
example if some one projects does not look complete you can give ideas on how to help them

  3. Constructive feedback is when you show someone what you believe they did wrong and what you think they can do to improve it. Constructive feedback is used to not hurt the personals feelings or point out every back thing, but it’s to help the person understand what they need to do in order to improve their project. Although constructive feedback is mostly used for pointing out the parts you think need improving, it can also be used to point out the positive parts of ones project and what they can do to make those points stronger.

    • Well said! It is vital to recognize that constructive criticism doesn’t necessarily need to stem from only “what you believe they did wrong.” Take note, everyone!

Constructive feedback is when you see something that can possibly be improved, and you point out the area that needs improvement or needs to be changed and you give them your idea on how they can change it. And you can teach them what to do to avoid making that same mistake over again. Also constructive feedback should usually be positive. An example of constructive feedback is, when a student turns in an essay and the teacher hands it back with advice on how to make it better or stronger. Also the replies on everyone’s posts are all constructive feedback.

    • Well said! Note that one of the key goals of this blog is to provide a safe space for all of YOU to provide constructive feedback for each other. This course should not be limited to only “when a student turns in an essay and the teacher hands it back.” Yes, a teacher’s feedback is important, but I personally feel that it shouldn’t be any more important than the feedback you receive from your peers.

  5. constructive criticism is when you give advice to someone on anything that they are showing you like a project or something like that. You tell them what they need to improve on in a respectful way and how they should imrove on their mistakes.

  6. Constructive feedback is when you tell a group or a person how they could have done something differently on a project, report, or presentation. The feedback may not always be positive but at least you learn from others what you could have done differently so next time you don’t make the same mistake. I feel that constructive feedback makes you into a better student.

  7. Constructive feedback is when you tell people what you think about their project and tell them ways they can improve on their work with out being rude or disrespectful. You also tell the person what you thought of their work.

  8. Constructive feedback to me is when you give someone harsh advice to help them out. Constructive feedback might make someone feel bad because its something they are doing wrong but it helps them learn from there mistakes. An example of constructive feedback is when someone cheats on a test it doesn’t make them a bad student it just shows next time you should study! Constructive feedback is also positive because it helps the person learn from there mistakes!

    • “Constructive feedback might make someone feel bad because its something they are doing wrong but it helps them learn from there mistakes.”

When feedback focuses only on what a person does wrong, it is no longer feedback — it is now just criticism. Our goal here is to learn from each other using constructive feedback, not just criticism, so please revisit your definition here.

  9. To me, constructive feedback is being critical of one’s work without being rude and harsh. It could also be a positive comment as well, but I tend to associate constructive feedback with comments about improvement. An example of this would be: If a student were to write a rough draft of paper and then ask their teacher to look over it, the teacher’s response to the student about the draft would be constructive feedback. Whether it’s “Great Job,” or “This part could use some work.”

  10. Constructive feed back is not necessarily giving someone a compliment, but it is more giving them an honest opinion on their, work, performance, etc so that they may do better in the future.
-An example is would be in the scenario of a theatre performance: I was really moved by your performance but i think the fluidity of the play would have been better if you fed off of the other actors during your scene.

  11. terwilligerse

Constructive feedback is when you give an individual an honest opinion or response about that person’s project. You can tell that person what you liked about their project or presentation and can also give advise on what they should elaborate on and in what areas they should improve. For example if someone is having trouble throwing a baseball the correct way, you offer that person your help and show that person the correct way to throw the baseball.

  12. constructive feedback is when you tell someone what they did good but also what they can do to make it better next time. you can do this by giving them a hint in the right direction or maybe giving some tips that they can use the next time they do something. an example of this is someone takes a shot in basketball and misses you dont tell them that they suck and should just stop playing instead you should tell them that maybe if you shoot it this way or guide them they will make it next time

  13. what it means to give feedback, is to give your thoughts or oppions on your classmates project in a way that helps them for future projects. Also it means that you aren’t being mean or disrespectful in anyway towards the other people. While giving feedback is it also important to think how does the project reflect the task that was assigned.

  14. Constructive feedback is when you give advice to someone on how they can make something more effective but also tell them what you liked about what they did. An example of this is that someone is writing a book and the plot is very interesting but isn’t described very well, so someone may tell them that the plot is very intriguing but they could expand on their ideas.

    • Fantastic example! Note how in your example you make it a point to balance the positive with the negative feedback. This is a critical strategy to use, for if one focuses only on the negative, one can expect to get only negativity in return.

  15. To give constructive feedback means to be stern but nice. Dont just say someones presentation was good or bad you need to elaborate on why it was good or bad. Use some commentary to give feedback, but always be respectful.

Ex.: Your use of concrete detail and commentry are good but maybe in the future you could have more visuals.

    • Given that I provided the example that you mention in class, I ask that you please provide another example. (See Bryce’s or Donovan’s comments for inspiration.)

      • For example, if you have a teammate on a sports team and he does not pass all the time, you dont tell that player that he is a horrible teammate and player you just nicely timely him for the future to pass more.

        • Good example. In this scenario, it probably would also help to take one more step and explain to that person WHY they should pass the ball more. Instilling motivation for following advice is sometimes more critical than the advice itself.

  16. Constructive feedback is useful, honest, respectful, supportive, motivating comments and suggestions that result in a positive outcome. Most of the time feedback is focused on the things we have done wrong so you should also point out the things someone has done well.

  17. constructive feed back is when you tell some one what they did wrong or where they can improve by telling them how or pointing them in the right direction (ex. if some one runs a red light and you were in the car you wouldn’t say your a terrible driver. You would say made next time you should slow down.
